Travis Purser

Are you looking to create engaging and effective learning experiences for your organization?

I'm a seasoned instructional designer with a proven track record developing impactful training for organizations of all sizes.

I have led small teams through projects from concept to completion. I have also provided focused support for new projects or those already under way--for example, by developing e-learning from an existing storyboard using Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate.

What motivates me is strategic thinking, creativity, and getting the work done on time to help people learn valuable new knowledge and skills that make life better. Having fun is also good.

My commitment is evident in a commendation letter that I received from Mayor Ted Wheeler after completing an e-learning curriculum for Portland’s new online permitting system as well as in the kind words of many colleagues.

This portfolio features a few of my favorite projects from the past. I would be thrilled if my future projects included solving your training and development needs.

PROJECTS

Design, Development, and Project Management of Technology Training

City of Portland, Bureau of Development Services

The Portland Bureau of Development Services was replacing outdated technology, and 1,200 employees needed to learn how to use a new online system that tracked all the building permits in the city. I designed and planned this technical training program and developed it using Adobe Captivate. The program included guided practice and a website.

Automotive Dealer Training

General Motors

As a lead instructional designer for the Camaro dealer training at General Motors, I created a wide variety of instructional materials for salespeople. This video introduces an exciting new feature—Interior Spectrum Lighting—and shows dealers how to operate it. I wrote the script for this video and provided consultation during the shoot at GM’s studio in Detroit.

The Onboarding Experience, New Teller Academy

SunTrust Bank

With the rise of online banking, SunTrust Bank could no longer justify training all its new tellers in-person at its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Working with two other instructional designers at GP Strategies, I created a new remote onboarding program that was accessible from computers, tablets, and smartphones. Feedback was consistently positive, with new hires saying the training was convenient, engaging, and relevant. This project initiated a Design Thinking approach to training development that became a cornerstone of the GP Strategies approach to instructional design.

Four-Door Model

Nike and SunTrust Bank

As a senior instructional designer on the iLearn Team at Nike, I designed and developed e-learning for managers based on the book, Multipliers, by Liz Wiseman. A wide variety of quality content already existed, and managers demanded more control over their learning than a basic page-turner course would provide. The non-linear Four-Door Model I used was fast to develop, provided great learner autonomy, and received positive feedback. Later, I proposed this model to SunTrust Bank, which adopted it for all its compliance training. The Four-Door Model shifted the organization’s thinking about what e-learning could be.
